Over the past week I have been busy linking with schools via Skype. Talking directly into their classrooms as part of the educational program for the expedition. On the South Pole Expedition I talked to the students from my  tent in the middle of the remote Antarctic wilderness. It was a great feeling to be able to communicate first hand from the cold extremes of the planet. 

I want to send a  big thank you to Mrs Brake and her students at Finham Park Comprehensive School for making the scary snakes as part of saving energy through the DoNation Site. Not only is it a fun excersise but it gets the students thinking about their own planet.

There is no problem with people growing up and making their way through life with a respect for the planet they live on.

I also want to thank the following schools whoI have Skyped in the last few days. There are a further 30 schools involved and via Skype itself we are extending this around the globe. It’s all about awareness and individual responsibility.

One of the main reasons for succeeding on the South Pole expedition was to do with maintaining myself and the equipement.

Each day I worked on broken bindings – skis – tent – sledge  and other equipment to keep the expedition going. I maintained my feet and tried to keep my health up on route. Over 50 days in normal life you pick up illnesses and things around you fail. So you head to the chemist or hard ware store – the only shop I had was the items I carried with me.

Suzy: To think, I only met Mark Wood on 3 November, less than two months ago. He arrived at our central London offices out of breath. To be fair, we are four flights of stairs up, but you’d expect a man about to set of on the ‘toughest journey on the planet’ to be pretty fit, no?! It certainly made me feel better about the mid-way rest stop I take on a bad day!

Our introduction to Mark came through The DoNation, Life Size Media’s pro-bono client that is all about stimulating behavioural change in a fun and engaging way. Mark’s motivation for taking on the epic North South Solo Expedition is raising awareness of climate change and man’s destruction of the Poles. So teaming up with The DoNation was the perfect fit. In return for him risking his life (apparently there’s a 25% chance he won’t make it back), he is asking people to pledge everyday carbon-saving actions, from eating less meat to using less plastic. And from my perspective, it was a dream come true: a heroic story untold – of danger, record-breaking and adventure – combined with the most important message of our generation: saving the planet.

So after a quick strategy session with Mark and Hermione (The DoNation’s inspirational founder), we got to work. And how much fun the last two months have been! Mark’s daily call has become a moment of tranquility in our otherwise boisterous office. Listening to how he’s getting on is inspirational, awe-inspiring, and at times even a little emotional. To think that he has been alone on the ice for over a month now is really quite mind-boggling.

For those of you who haven’t come across the North South Solo Expedition yet, Mark has a seriously epic mission ahead of him. He’s on course to reach the South Pole in 50 days and then he’s going to do it all again up at the North Pole, where the challenge is even greater as for most of it he’ll be in pitch black all-encompasing darkness.

Interest in his story has come from the most eclectic mix of industries. Thanks to the fantastic support of ‘snow hunter’ Patrick Thorne we secured wide spread coverage in the snow sports industry, from the respected SkiNews.com to SkiInfo.com. TalkSport have done some great interviews, and ‘green’ publications  from The Ecologist to Friends of the Earth and LowCarbonEconomy.com have shown their support. The Adventure Blog and other explorer publications have covered the journey. And of course, Mark’s local Coventry papers have got behind him, with several nice write-ups by the Coventry Telegraph and Coventry Observer. The list goes on, there’s even been coverage in Firenet.com, a throwback to Mark’s days as a firefighter. Highlights have included BBC News, the Daily Mirror’s ’Fireman’s Pole’s and today’s front page slash across Metro.

Each of these media hits makes me proud. To have the opportunity to work for such an inspirational guy, on such a worthy cause, has been a tremendous privilege. I urge you to visit The DoNation and support Mark.
